Craniofacial Reconstruction

Craniofacial reconstruction is correction of congenital or acquired deformities of the skull and facial bones. Congenital deformities include craniosynostosis or premature fusion of the joints of the skull in infancy, Crouzon’s and Apert’s syndrome. Acquired deformities are secondary to cancer or trauma.

Reconstruction for craniosynostosis and the syndromes is usually performed during infancy and childhood. The skull is reshaped to allow appropriate growth of the brain and to improve the cosmetic appearance. Surgery for the jaws may be necessary during or after puberty by means of distraction osteogenesis or orthognathic surgery.
